Environmental Procedure

Oil based Waste - Our dedicated Oil based recovery team deal only with oil and petroleum based products. This eliminates any chance of cross contamination with other Hazardous Wastes. The soil debris from this waste is tested for Diesel Range Organics (DRO) and Petrol Range Organics (PRO) on a regular basis in accordance to disposal facility regulations. Vehicles used in the movement of this waste are regularly checked for non-compliance under the framework of ISO14001 guidelines.
    Emergency Response Procedure - The bullet point procedure for Emergency Response is;
  • Drain Plugs, the first point of call in responding to an oil spill is to plug all drains in the vicinity to stop the spread of the affected area. Plugs remain until Site has been cleared by our Environmental Engineer; A Vacuum Tanker will remove any over ground contaminated sludge and empty affected manholes, drains and any other Environmental receptors;
  • Oil Dry is added to soak up remaining spillage;
  • High Powered Jetting Machines will immediately clean and operatives monitor all affected drains.
    Environmental Cleaning - If oil spill has contaminated soil or water then our on site team will begin the clean up process.
  • Soil Contamination is remedied using the Sump Recovery System. Bore holes are dug surrounding the contaminated area and flushed with water to saturate the soil. A larger bore hole, to the depth of the water table is created in centre of the spill. A pump is installed in the centre bore hole and draws all liquids to it. The pump feeds into the Mobile Interceptor, which separates the oil and water on site. The Hazardous Oil stays in the Interceptor and the water is recycled, and used in the flushing process. A programme is drawn up depending on levels of pollution. Soil is tested and monitored until remedied to Dutch Standards of Environmental Cleaning. Dutch Standards are the worldwide acceptable levels of contaminant residues remaining in effected area and are measured at one part oil to one million parts water.
  • If oil based contaminants reach rivers or other waterways there is a high risk of serious Environmental damage. This problem is remedied using the Boom and Skim Recovery System. The affected area is surrounded with booms to stop the oil spreading along the waterway, contaminated drains are flushed until clean, into the boomed area. By means of a Vacuum Tanker the water in the boomed area is skimmed at regular intervals. This will eliminate oil as the oil floats on top of the water. Oil dry is also used to soak up oil in the water. Contaminated flora is washed and left for natural recovery and contaminated riverbank soil is removed if necessary.
Chemical Spills - It is up to the client to act fast and appropriately in such an occurrence, our highly experienced staff will then come in and once briefed on the situation begin the clean up process. Our Environmental Engineer will attend all emergencies and has the qualifications to deal with any chemical response situation.
    What we want from you in the case of a chemical spill;
  • If a serious fire or toxicity hazard exists pull the fire alarm
  • Avoid walking in spill or breathing vapours
  • Protect environmental receptors, if this can be done safely
  • Close door to affected area. Isolate area and prevent re-entry
  • Relocate to safe location
  • Have a person familiar with the incident and laboratory available to provide information to emergency response personnel
  • Do not re-enter area until instructed to do so by our Environmental Engineer
    What we will do to prevent hazard spreading and clean up spill;
  • Secure immediate area to prevent access and exposure to personnel and plug all drains in vicinity
  • Consult Chemical Index and follow appropriate emergency response procedure for chemicals involved, most chemicals are initially treated as follows;
  • Control the source and confine the spill to a small area using relevant Spill Kit supplies
  • Treat chemical if necessary and absorb free liquids using appropriate machine or soakage material
  • Clean spill area with water
  • Place debris in appropriate container, attach a Hazardous Waste Tag and remove
  • If the chemical has reached the drainage or process systems, then a full and comprehensive 'chemical flush' will take place. This is achieved by flushing the affected drainage system with water and, by means of a Vacuum Tanker at the exit point, removing both Hazardous chemical and diluted water.
  • A CCTV inspection will determine whether any damage has been done to the drainage system.
* Spill Kit supplies include Protective Equipment, Health and Safety Manual, Index of Chemicals, PH Tester, Neutralising Residues, Cleaning Equipment and Chemical Soak Sponges.
